Review: JoVi’s Tacos are the Best Tacos in Baton Rouge

Up until recently, good authentic Mexican food was hard to come by in the greater Baton Rouge area. Occasionally rumors of a great Mexican restaurant would come along the grapevine, but the hype didn’t quite meet the expectations. Outside the usual chain offerings, which do serve their purpose it can be supposed, the Mom and Pop (or Abuelita and Abuelito) comida autentica was few and far between. What is a taco lover in Baton Rouge supposed to do?

Where can I get authentic tacos in Baton Rouge?

Well, your search is over. JoVi’s Tacos is your best bet for delicious tacos in Baton Rouge. JoVi’s is authentic and then some, but has a name (husband and wife team JO and VI), a small and adventurous taco centered menu, a central location, and ongoing positive testimonies with repeat visitors! Oh, and did you know that this place is FUN! The casual and cozy vibe makes JoVi’s an easy go-to choice for a relaxed lunch or dinner.

Indoor or outdoor seating in addition to a small bar area is available to accommodate date night as well as larger parties. (Did the soccer game just end?)

JoVi’s is bright, colorful with cool murals inside and out (be sure to get your camera out for the selfie-worthy Taco Love wall.) Warm smiles and hellos from JoVi’s staff will welcome you in.

What’s the Taco Menu Like?

Not only are the greetings authentic but so is the menu. JoVi’s features a small menu that is big on fresh, homemade, adventurous flavors, good portions—and will not break the bank. All tortillas (corn and flour) are handmade daily. Same goes for the fresh squeezed rocks margarita (more on that later.)

Some of the taco’s found at JoVi’s Tacos in Baton Rouge

From traditional Nopales tacos made from prickly pear cactus (don’t worry they took the spikes off) topped with fresh Pico and queso fresco; to tender, slow smoked brisket topped with salsa Verde (with a kick); to an absolutely exquisite camote taco—roasted sweet potato topped with black beans, Pico and spicy chipotle sauce (a favorite at Red Stick Strong HQ.) There are nothing but exciting flavor combos at JoVi’s!

Seafood fans, JoVi’s has something for you, too. Sauteed gulf shrimp, oysters, and cod fillet fish tacos. Meat lovers can order tacos featuring pork, Spanish sausage, or chicken fajita. There’s even a surf and turf!

Veggie lovers can also find a taco (and the staff can even adapt some options to be vegan.) Seventeen tacos to choose from either a-la-carte or in single, double, or triple combos with a generous variety of sides.

Super insider tip: ask your JoVi’s server if they currently have fresh, authentic tamales to take home. At certain times of the month and during holidays, JoVi’s offers batches of tamales for sale. You’re welcome!

All orders come with chips and salsa and if tacos are not exactly your jam, try the corn tortilla Sopes with mouthwatering slow smoked brisket, topped with beans, salsa Verde, Pico and guacamole or the quesadilla with flour tortilla topped with any choice of meat, guacamole, and sour cream. Can you say OH YEAH?

Best margarita in Baton Rouge

Speaking of oh yeah—there’s one more thing. Let’s talk margaritas. Who doesn’t love a good margarita? There’s a reason it’s the most popular mixed drink in the United States. Salt/no salt/ rocks or frozen, never will you ever have a better margarita than JoVi’s margarita! JoVi’s owner Jorge prides himself on using only fresh ingredients, no premade mix whatsoever. Jorge’s recipe might be secret, but what isn’t a secret is how excited he is when someone takes that first margarita sip and delights at an absolutely incredible margarita. JoVi’s margaritas are that good.
