Rejoice! Jesus is risen from the dead! This is the truth of the gospel of Christianity and is the reason for the celebration of Easter. Sometimes called Resurrection Sunday, Easter observes when Jesus, who was killed by the religious and governmental leaders of His time, was raised back to life. This miracle is the heart of Christianity, making Easter the most holy holiday of the Christian faith.

What is Easter?
Jesus is God’s only begotten son who lived on Earth over 2,000 years ago. Jesus had a ministry on Earth where he told people about God and God’s ways, sometimes called God’s Kingdom. Jesus explained that the only way to God for a human being is through Himself, surrendering one’s life (our wants; will; conduct; hearts and minds) to Jesus. He also told people who believed this to repent for their sins. There is no other way for a person to be restored to God except through Jesus.
Easter is specifically the celebration of Jesus being raised from the dead. (This is why some say Resurrection Sunday rather than Easter.) The things Jesus said during his lifetime earned Him the anger of religious leaders and government leaders. Their anger led to a desire to kill Jesus for blasphemy. In the week before His death, Jesus observed Passover with his students. One of his students betrayed Jesus to the leaders who arrested Jesus. His arrest led to a persecution by a government official; Jesus was hung on a cross until dead, a capital punishment though he committed no crime. The day Jesus died is memorialized by Christians as Good Friday.
On the third day after His bodily death, Jesus was brought back to life. Jesus’ resurrection is significant as the cornerstone of the Christian faith as victory over sin and death, representing triumph of life over death and hope over despair thus fulfilling the promise of salvation in Christian theology. Easter also encapsulates the core belief in Jesus’ divinity, His role as savior and affirms the promise of eternal life. Easter’s significance lies in its message of redemption and renewal, inspiring hope, forgiveness, and spiritual rebirth among believers worldwide.
If you want to learn more about Jesus’ resurrection and what that means for each of us, we recommend going right to the source:
- In the Book of Luke: Jesus’ betrayal and arrest (Luke 22); Jesus’ trial, conviction, and death on a cross (Luke 23); Jesus coming back to life (Luke 24)
- In the Book of Matthew: The plot to kill Jesus (Matthew 26); Jesus goes to trial and is crucified (Matthew 27); Jesus is raised from the dead (Matthew 28)
- In the book of John: Jesus’ arrest and trial (John 18); Jesus is convicted and killed (John 19); Jesus is alive again and shows Himself to his students (John 20)
We can also recommend the preaching and teaching of RC Sproul (an American theologian.) Listen to Dr. Sproul’s teaching on the resurrection of Jesus.
To bring home the message of how important it is that Jesus was brought back to life, we close with this statement from the Paul, an apostle of Jesus:
And if Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is in vain and your faith is in vain.
~ The Apostle Paul, 1 Corinthians 15:14
Conclusion
Where are you going to celebrate Resurrection Sunday this year in Baton Rouge? You don’t have to know everything about Jesus or His life, ministry, or being raised after death to attend Easter services. Any of the churches above will welcome you and help you learn more about Jesus and what it means to be a Christian. Of course, we did include some resources to learn more, but there is no substitute for attending church with other believers. If this list is helpful to you, we’d love to hear about it. Rejoice! Jesus is our risen savior! Happy Easter.
